AN afternoon tea was held in the ballroom at Bridges Community Centre in Monmouth last Wednesday, to celebrate the Community Connections Befriending Scheme.
It was hoped the event would bring together the people involved with the scheme to discuss how it makes a difference to people.
The befriending scheme supports people over the age of 50 from across the county who are socially isolated and links volunteer ‘befrienders’ to provide company and support.
Eight organisations interested in supporting the project were represented at the event, and about 50 people went along.
Sarah Rochira, The Older Peoples Commissioner for Wales, attended the event as she is interested in the work the programme does to address loneliness and isolation. Sarah talked about the value of schemes such as Community Connections and the importance of friendship.
This week is ‘age positive week’ so is a chance for the team to promote the work the scheme does and ask people to get in touch if they would like to be involved. The scheme is always in need of volunteers. Anyone interested in getting involved can call 01600 710895 or email [email protected]
