Plans to build a new discount supermarket in Caldicot were withdrawn by developers a day before they were to be discussed by councillors. Monmouthshire County Council's (MCC) planning committee had been recommended to refuse the application last Tuesday (2nd September) by officers. The store, expected to be run by Aldi or Lidl, would have been built on Castlegate Business Park. The plans had gained support from Portskewett and Sudbrook Community Council, who recommended it for approval, and a number of residents. But Caldicot Town Council said it was against the MCC policy for out-of-town developments and was "not in the best interest of the economy of Caldicot." Communications company Mitel, which built the Castlegate Business Park and employs 240 staff on the site, said it has invested more than £1million in the site recently but had frozen investment at Caldicot until the application had been resolved.
