THE Chepstow Racecourse Market and Car Boot has closed permanently.
After the last market on 19th October, the decision was made by Chepstow Racecourse to shut it down following years of poor attendance.
The Racecourse has only run the market since April. It took over the operation from a third party who ended their association with the market the previous month.
Having run for almost forty years, the Chepstow Market and Car Boot once housed hundreds of stalls, but has seen a significant decline in customer footfall for the past few years.
Because of its popularity, the racecourse has tried to reinvigorate the event, continuing efforts of previous managers.
Described as an "unfortunate decision" by Caroline Freiha, Deputy General Manager at the racecourse, the company will now focus on its expanded programme of other events held at the site.
The news has been met with sadness by fans of the market on Facebook.
Paula Louise Rooke wrote: "I moved here in 1987 and the Sunday Market was a huge part of Chepstow. If you didn't see friends or neighbours in the week then you were bound to see them walking around the market on a cold, windy, Sunday morning. Even if it was only to cure the hangover cravings of a Yorkshire pud with pork 'n' apple, and maybe a freshly cooked donut!! So sad xx"
Tracey Sisson agreed saying: "We used to travel over from Hereford regularly, we could have a whole day out walking round the market then going for a late Sunday lunch on the way home. Very sad xx"
Both traders and Chepstow Racecourse have thanked all those who have visited and been a part of past events.
