Garway Heritage Group

Why and when were Herefordshire’s hill forts developed? And why did they fall into disuse, leaving only post holes and pottery fragments?

At this month’s Garway Heritage Group meeting Tim Hoverd, project manager for Herefordshire Archaeology, will explore recent evidence for the beginning and development of hill forts, the people who used them and when and why they fell into disuse.

The meeting will begin on Tuesday, 15 October, 7.30 pm at Garway Community Centre, HR2 8RQ. All are welcome, and the £5 admission fee for visitors includes refreshments following the meeting. garwayheritagegroup.co.uk

Chepstow and District Garden Appreciation Society

The 2019/2020 programme of Chepstow and District Garden Appreciation Society commenced on Wednesday 25th September.

Following a short annual general meeting members enjoyed a very interesting talk given by Laura Willgoss from Wildgoose Nursery at Munslow. The talk  “Creating Beautiful Borders” was illustrated by excellent slides.  New members were welcomed to the meeting and there were other visitors.

On Wednesday 23rd October, the speaker will be Ross Barbour from Old Court Nurseries in Colwall, who will speak on “Looking forward to winter”. The meeting, which will be held at 7pm for 7.30pm, is held in the downstairs community room at the Chepstow Leisure Centre. The visitor’s fee is £4 but this amount is refundable if visitors later decide to take up a subscription and join the society. Meetings are held monthly with the exception of December, July and August - garden visits are arranged from time to time.

Llandenny WI

Llandenny WI were the guests of Llansoy and Llangwm WI this month.

After a warm welcome members were given a finely researched and illuminating talk on Rembrandt and his world by Art Historian Marjolijn Laarhoven.

She set his paintings in the religious and political context of 17th century Amsterdam, whilst explaining at the same time the major influences on his work - most notably the 16th century Italian painter Caravaggio and his use of light and shade - which Rembrandt further developed to sublime effect.

The group’s next meeting is on Wednesday 6th November when the talk will be on wildlife conservation in Zululand. All are welcome.
