Letters published recently in the Beacon have rightly criticised aspects of the County Councils proposed changes to Agincourt Square, particularly the proven to be dangerous low kerbs (pedestrian’s trip hazard) and the fact that the money could be better spent improving parking facilities and road surfaces.
The advent of electric and hybrid powered vehicles running solely on battery power in urban areas also brings added danger to shared vehicle/pedestrian space. Such vehicles are virtually silent especially as they will not be travelling fast enough to generate tyre noise. I foresee some people wandering about in what appears to be pedestrianised are forgetting that vehicles also have access.
I am sure the council will progress this scheme however and I would suggest that Agincourt Square could further enhanced by the removal of the railings enclosing the area under the arches of the Shire Hall. This jewel in Monmouth’s crown which provided shelter and a meeting place for generations of Monmothians now says ‘keep out’ and presents an unfriendly facade to visitors.
I would also suggest that the scheme appears to allow sufficient space for the market to move back to the top of town thus bringing business/people back and freeing valuable parking spaces currently lost on the two busiest days of the week!
