Organisers of Monmouth’s night shelter for the homeless in Priory Street have praised the ‘amazing’ generosity of the people of the town and surrounding areas in donating items to the project following an appeal in the Beacon.
“As a result we are now able to plan with some confidence, not just for the next 10 weeks, but for subsequent years,” said one of the volunteers Gill Waters.
“Obviously needs will be ongoing and there is still a long way to go to ensure we are fully operational by 8th January, but at this point I just wanted to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the people who have shown such kindness and love which will help transform the lives of the people using the night shelter, simply by demonstrating that they are not invisible, that they do matter, and other people – complete strangers - care about them.”
She added: “Essentially by supporting the night shelter, donors are giving the homeless who will use it, the chance of a new start in life – it doesn’t get better than that. And at a time when our country and communities have been rendered asunder by Brexit (fatigue), it has been wonderful to experience such a united response from a wide spectrum of Beacon readers.
“The true spirit of Christmas is alive and well in our community, and, as this is a church project, this quote from 1.John 3:18 seems very appropriate: ‘True love shows itself in action.’
“The people of Monmouth have certainly lived up to this.”
