A 106-year-old Monmouth woman, who has voted in almost every election during her adult life, was turned away from her local polling station today.

Winifred Hawkins was unable to vote at Wyesham, on a day in which a number of people have been affected by clerical and technical errors up and down the country.

The former dancer’s granddaughter Hannah Freeman took to social media tonight in outrage over the blunder. Referring to this photo of Winifred she said: “This was my Gran who, at 106, walked into our local polling station - a Labour voter all her life - upon arriving she was told that she was not on the electoral roll...I have seen the electoral roll letter and saw her name quite clearly on it at the beginning of the year!!!!”

Hannah's post is gathering support with more than 100 people commenting on the post, and 348 sharing the news.

The error was cleared up after the polls closed at 10pm, with Hannah adding: “We have spoken with the electoral commission and it seems that in 2015 the law on the electoral roll was changed for one year only - I don’t think that the lady who worked for them and visited us understood this.

"My mother was told that everything was fine and all in the household were registered - however apparently they weren’t verified - how a 106 year old verifies themself is beyond me!

“I wonder how many thousands of elderly British residents have been inadvertently disenfranchised through misinformation. Grandma was very sad not to vote - it is unfair!”

Investigations continue into what caused this confusion for the family.

Winifred, born in Cardiff in 1911, was featured in the Beacon in February as we asked if she was Monmouthshire's oldest person, as she celebrated her 106th birthday.
