A BEACHLEY business owner has revealed his frustration after the main route into Sedbury was closed for resurfacing work this week.
The road in Sedbury between the roundabout and the junction with Ormerod Road is currently closed between 7.30am and 5.30pm for resurfacing works.
The improvements, which began on Thursday 20th October, have seen the old surface road surface removed before being completely re-laid.
A diversion is currently in place via the A48 and Sedbury lane, and access has been maintained for pedestrians and emergency vehicles, but Philip Orantes from the Old Ferry Inn in Beachley says his business has been affected.
He said: “A sign was put up two weeks ago saying the road was going to be closed during half term, the whole road being closed for eight days.
“We would normally have around 25-30 customers, but today we have had two.
“We’re an independent business, we’re not a Wetherspoons and we rely on customers coming in.
“It’s going to be quite difficult.”
Mr Orantes says he spoke to the council about his concerns but said they “didn’t want to listen.”
Cllr Vernon Smith, Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) cabinet member for highways said: “The surface of Beachley Road is reaching the end of its life and it’s better value for money if we resurface it now rather than carry out temporary fixes.
“I know this is a popular road in Sedbury, so to minimise disruption we’re going to do the work in the school holidays. I’d like to thank the local businesses, residents and commuters for their patience while we get the improvements done.”
Cllr Patrick Molyneux, councillor for Sedbury said: “I’m pleased that the county council has decided to resurface the road in Sedbury, and very pleased that the work will take place over the half term so there won’t be any disruption for the school.”
The work is expected to be completed this Friday (28th October).
