Six key projects in Monmouth are set to benefit from a share of £149,000.

Subject to Cabinet approval next week, the money will come from funds held by the county council in connection with Kingswood Gate housing development - with developers legally bound to contribute to the cost of community and social infrastructure provision.

The largest sum (£40,000) would be used to resurface the multi-use games area at Monmouth Leisure Centre. The tennis courts at Monmouth Sportsground would also be resurfaced while Rockfield Central Open Space and Play Area would receive £29,000, Monmouth Allotments £25,000 and Chippenham Mead Play Area and Monmouth Town Football Club £10,000 each.

MCC has been working with local organisations to improve community sport and recreation facilities in the town. A number have secured grant aid which requires an element of match funding.

The leisure centre wants to provide good quality football training facilities, particularly for the juniors and has been awarded £46,640 from the Welsh Government towards the cost of a 3G surface and a secure fence around the informal tennis court area on condition the work is completed and the grant claimed by 31st March 2020.

The estimated cost is £86,000 (although only £69,725 is eligible for grant-aid) so MCC officers are recommending the council allocates £40,000 to ensure the project can be delivered on time.

Monmouth Tennis Club has seen a surge of interest in the sport due mainly to the fact that the club has a Level 4 tennis coach who holds regular training sessions.

In partnership with the club, MCC submitted an application to Sport Wales for money to resurface the three sportsfield courts and install a gate access system.

A grant was recently allocated for the gate access system but the club still needs £40,000 for the resurfacing.

The proposal is for MCC to contribute £35,000 with the club providing the balance.

Monmouth Town FC meanwhile needs to build a new 100-seater covered stand as a legal requirement to maintain its place in the top three tiers of the FAW football pyramid in Wales. The club has already secured a grant for £33,200 towards the £43,242 total. The proposed £10,000 contribution from MCC would cover the balance.

Monmouth Allotments, located in an isolated spot between the River Wye and A40, have been targeted by vandals and also, periodically, suffered from an infestation of rabbits. £25,000 for stock-proof fencing should help to solve both problems.

Money directed to the Rockfield project would extend the existing play area to include more play equipment, family seating and a community growing space while Chippenham Mead Play Area, which is being relocated, would use its £10,000 to secure the necessary consents, including commissioning and implementing the recommendations of a tree survey.
