Start the New year with a 9.5 mile Wye Valley walk just over the county border in Gloucestershire on Sunday (January 7).

The Monmouth Walking Club will be following Hewelsfield Lane to Hewelsfield village via field paths, then continuing uphill from the village on a quiet lane (views of the River Severn) to join the Gloucestershire Way.

This goes through Woolaston Woodside and on to reach woods.

The walk goes uphill through woodland for 1.5 miles before emerging to join a lane at Beams Tufts, then a footpath to reach the B4228, to the final half mile back to our starting point. 12 stiles.

That’s followed by a few undulations, plus a gradual rise through woods for a mile or so.

There is a shorter walk available, four miles around Monmouth, a flat and easy stroll across fields to Wonastow Estate and back via Link Road, Beech Road and Chippenham Fields.

There are no stiles, but some steps which can be avoided.

New members are always welcome to join Monmouth Rambling and Hillwalking Club. There is a small annual membership subscription.

Suitable footwear and clothing are essential, and please bring a drink and packed lunch.

For members’ safety and enjoyment on walks, the club has a set of coronavirus notes that are available on request.
