Taking inspiration from a 1970s children’s tv programme, some youngsters from Wyesham are aiming to play their part in keeping their environment clean.
Summer Breeze, age 9, Maisie Breeze age 7 and Kenton Breeze age 6 with the help of new recruit Poppy Bevan age 7 have been ’Wombling’ around Wyesham on Sundays for the past five years and can often be seen collecting litter with gloves, putting out dog poo bag refills, using a brush for broken glass and litter picking grabbers using hand sanitiser whenever possible. They have now have replaced their old sack cart with a larger new one to help them carry all the rubbish left behind.Summer says the reason they pick is "to protect our planet and our future, and to look after where we live" and her younger brother, Kenton added "we pick litter so all the animals don’t eat the rubbish". With a little help from parents Ken and Sarah Breeze, the modern-day ’Wyesham Wombles’ have recently been spotted in Tudor Road and the park, play area and green, Wyesham Rd, Oak Crescent, McColls Green, Woodland View and Newland Way."They put out empty pop bottles for dog poo bags to help combat the dog fouling problem" said mum Sarah who helps them with their facebook page.So unlike the 1970s characters, who were very secretive about their existence, the four of them can be seen every Sunday ’wombling free’ around the Wyesham neighbourhood with their trusty sack cart.We are sure Great Uncle Bulgaria would be very proud of them. You can keep up-to-date with the latest wombling activity or send them a message on their facebook page ’Wyesham Wombles’.
