TEAMS from England and Wales are teeing up ahead of a four day Ryder Cup-style golf tournament starting today, called the Wyeder Cup.
The competition, between two teams of 16 amateur players, is a local version of the Ryder Cup over four days of matchplay golf contested across Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean.
The cup is currently held by England but the Wales team are confident that they can take the trophy and winners’ medals back across the river this year.
The Wales team will be sponsored by Welsh Company Refit Shopfitters.
Refit MD Jeff Nind said: “We are a Welsh company and staunch supporters of everything Welsh. We are also very keen to support the local community in and around the Monmouthshire area. Sponsoring the Wales team is a great opportunity for the company and we wish them every success in the tournament”.
Wales’ captain, Dean Tyler added: “The Welsh boys are hugely grateful for the generous sponsorship deal. It will help us to put out a strong team and we really believe that we have got the players to win it this year”.
The competition kicks off at Raglan Parc Golf Club today (Thursday 22nd June) with six pairs from each country contesting fourball matchplay.
Five more pairs of golfers will represent their countries in different pairs matchplay formats on each of the next two days at Forest Hills Golf Course and Monmouth Golf Course.
Finally, Ryder Cup style, 13 players from each team will face each other in singles matchplay at the Royal Forest of Dean Golf Club on Sunday 25th June.
The winning team will be the first country to hit the magical 20 point mark!
The England team will be supported by Express Windows (Coleford) Limited.
