LAST weekend's fixtures saw both under-12 Monmouth Town Junior Football teams in action in the age group's cup semi-finals.
There was a tantalising prospect of an all Monmouth Town final awaiting the winners if both sides were successful.
The younger Monmouth Albion team had the harder draw on paper, away to second in the league Undy AFC. However all looked good when the Monmouth team took a 2-0 lead, but disaster struck when the Albion goalkeeper was sent off after an altercation with the Undy forward.
Even though the boys continued to battle hard, the extra man changed the whole complexion of the game, and Undy ran out 7-2 winners.
League leaders Monmouth Town seemed to have the easier draw, even playing away to Mardy, who they had beaten comfortably in their previous league meetings this season.
Monmouth were not at their best, but goals from Callum Wood and Sam Swingwood got them through, and the 2-1 half time score reflected the game.
With Mardy still in it going into the second half and chasing the game, gaps started to appear in their defence. Further goals from Town's Reuben Sutton, Oli Moss and two from Johnny Dunckley put Monmouth into the final with a 6-2 victory.
The cup final will be played at the end of the season, and it could end up being a league and cup double for the Monmouth Town team.
They remain top of the league, but with second place Undy not out of contention, the run in will be highly competitive.
The junior football club's other competitive teams are also progressing well in their respective cups. Both under-13s and under-14s teams have reached their cup semi-finals, and the under-16s are into their cup quarter final.
