Monmouth Town progressed through to the last 16 of the Welsh League cup with a 5-1 victory over visiting Cardiff Corinthians last Saturday at Pen-y- Pound Stadium.

The result was somewhat deceiving however as the side from the capital took the lead with just half an hour remaining.

Manager Andrew Smith used this match to give some game time to players that have been on the periphery in recent weeks.

Alderdice continued at right back in place of the suspended Ashley Ford and Luke Cleaves came in for the injured Aaron Davies at left back.

The improving Joe Loftus was handed a start in midfield alongside Rob Laurie while Sam Palmer and Elliot Ford looked to support Nick Harrhy from wide positions.

That left a strong looking bench of regulars with Elliot Evans, Chris Ham and Josh Bull joining youngster Morgan Osbourne.

The pattern of the game was set out early as the third division side sat deep, happy to concede possession and not allow any space in behind for Monmouth's pacy forward line.

The Kingfishers kept the ball well without really penetrating, and,on a sticky pitch Monmouth struggled to find any sort of momentum.

Elliot Ford did manage to get behind but his attempted lob rolled the wrong side of the upright. As Town got frustrated, some poor decisions and sloppy passing gave the Corries hope as they tried to counter-attack their higher placed opponents.

As the half time whistle sounded, it was hard to see where the breakthrough would come from.

Just five minutes into the second period and the break through did come, but not as might have been expected.

The Corinthians' No. 9, who looked dangerous throughout, slipped Guy and, following a few blocks, the ball fell to an oncoming midfielder to smash past Blackburn in the home goal.

Smith didn't hesitate to shuffle his pack and introduced Ham, Evans and Bull immediately.

Five minutes later and, after Alderdice had pirouetted through oncoming challenges, he found Bull who was brought down for a penalty which Macdonald converted.

Fresh legs and the Corries losing their slender advantage seemed to knock the stuffing out if them and Town's quality finally came through as the grinning Harrhy netted a brace with Evans and Ford both firing home late on to complete the scoring.

The Kingfishers face a mighty trip north next week when they visit Welsh Premier League side Gap Connah's Quay in the third round of the Welsh Cup, kick off 1.30pm.
