ON Saturday (8th July) Monmouth RFC staged one of their busiest ever days.

In the morning, 200 people gathered to watch the dramatic finale to the Lions series in New Zealand, followed by the inaugural Monmouth 10s tournament on Chippenham Fields in the afternoon.

Members and guests enjoyed a full breakfast courtesy of Emma and Hope Henry who worked tirelessly, supplying hungry rugby fans before settling down to witness the first drawn series between the two sides.

Before the game fans were given a fantastic insight into the only successful Lions tour of New Zealand when 1971 legend and record try scorer, John Bevan joined chairman Lloyd Davies to share his memories.

Then in the afternoon the inaugural Monmouth 10s tournament, organised by Monmouth club coach and schools rugby officer Craig Everett, was a resounding success, with top Welsh Premiership outfit Cross Keys winning.

Up against teams from higher leagues, hosts Monmouth secured an excellent and credible runners up.

Other teams attending included Risca Raiders, Chepstow and the University of South Wales.

The event is now expected to be an annual pre-season event. 

Training for the 2017/18 season continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings on the Chippenham Fields from 7pm.
