CHEPSTOW Boxing Club members are celebrating after great wins by two local boxers.

The club’s head coach Steve Woods was delighted that Jude Holmes gained a split decision verdict when he achieved one of three Welsh select team wins in a match in Guernsey.

Then Pat Mullane beat the current Midland Counties champion Corey Mountford of Stoke BC with a unanimous decision.

“We had two boxers in the Welsh finals,” Woods explained.

“First up was 17-year-old Patrick Larkin who was up against Ryan Fry of Cwmavon Hornets Boxing club.

“Fry is a tall southpaw and caused Larkin a few problems with his awkward style but once Patrick found his range the bout turned in his favour and he won by a split decision.

“This wasn’t Patrick’s best performance but a win is a win and it puts him into the GB quarter finals along with club mates Keiran Woods and Pat Mullane.”

But Woods admitted he had mixed emotions after the last bout the show did not go in the Chepstow boxer’s favour.

“Aiden Hampsey took on the very experienced Jake Tinklin of Pantside Boxing club whose head coach is former pro world champion Gavin Rees,” Woods added.

“Aiden started well and took control of the bout holding a better ring position. Both boxers were opting for the counter punch style of boxing and in the second round, Tinklin landed a peach of a right hook to Hampsey’s chin which knocked Hampsey down and he didn’t beat the count.

“He won’t box now for at least 30 days but he wasn’t upset and still looks forward to his next bout and we’ll be working on making sure he doesn’t make the same mistake again.”
