THREE sports in one race are challenging enough, without adding mechanical failures and rough weather to the mix, reports KELLY SALTER.

However, two Monmouth Tri Club members didn’t allow these setbacks to dampen their enthusiasm for triathlon.

Matt Unsworth took on the Challenge Gdansk Half Ironman in Poland, and enjoyed a fast course and clean sea water, despite suffering cramp in the swim, gear issues on the bike, and a hamstring injury in the run.

However, he still powered through in 5 hours 20 mins 44 secs to finish 18th in his age group.

Renske Bouwens also tackled the Bluestone Pembrokeshire Coast Standard Triathlon in Broadhaven at the weekend, which usually includes a 1500m swim, 42km bike ride and 10k run.

Unfortunately the wind-whipped sea made conditions too choppy to swim, so the event changed to a duathlon, and Renske whizzed around the hilly Pembrokeshire course, coming fourth in her age category.

Closer to home, Michael Francis conquered the Westcountry Water Park Sprint Triathlon, with a 750m swim, 18k bike ride and 5k run.

Anyone who is interested in getting involved in triathlon can go to the club website www.monmouthtrickub.org for details.
